Precautions

While flaxseeds offer numerous health benefits, it’s important to consider some precautions when incorporating them into your diet:

  1. Thyroid Concerns: Flaxseeds contain cyanogenic glycosides, which can form thiocyanates in the body. Excessive thiocyanate levels may potentially harm the thyroid gland. While this is generally not an issue for healthy individuals, those with thyroid conditions should moderate their intake to avoid complications.
  2. Digestive Issues: The high fiber content in flaxseeds can cause digestive discomfort such as bloating, gas, abdominal pain, and nausea, especially for individuals not accustomed to high fiber intake.
  3. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Health experts advise caution when consuming flaxseeds during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to their phytoestrogen content. Excessive intake could potentially affect fetal development and may lead to lower birth weight or disturbances in the offspring’s reproductive system.
